- MOMIGLIANO, ARNALDO DANTE
- MOMIGLIANO, ARNALDO DANTE (1908–1987), historian of
antiquity; born in Caraglio (Cuneo), Italy. After the Italian
antisemitic legislation of 1938 he settled in England,
where from 1951 to 1975 he was professor of
ancient history at University College, London. Momigliano wrote, in
Italian, books on Thucydides, Claudius, Philip of Macedon, as well as
works on classical historiography. His best-known English books are
Conflict Between Paganism and Christianity in the Fourth
Century (1963), and Studies in Historiography (1966).
One of his earlier works, Prime Linee di Storia della Tradizione
Maccabaica (1930, 3d ed. 1968), was an impressive contribution to
Jewish history of the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Also notable were
his Ricerche sull' organizzazione della Giudea sotte il dominio
romano (1934, 1967) and his chapters on the Second Temple period
in the Cambridge Ancient History. A comprehensive
bibliography of Momigliano's works is included in his Quarto
contributo alia storia depli studi classici e del mondo antico
(pp. 669–719). He was renowned for his deep learning and erudition.
